Cotton buds are of course better
Replica cats cannot be compared. Q-Tips use a lot more cotton on the tips, allowing them to hold a lot more. You would use a lot of the cheap ones. The plastic ones kept slipping into my fingers because the surface is smooth. I use fewer cotton swabs. I like that Q-Tips use natural materials and not plastic. Maybe you could use them as fire starters. At least the fumes aren't toxic like the cheap fakes that can be made in China.
