Review on Nintendo 3DS XL - Pretty in Pink/White: Explore Gaming on the Go by Donnie Boss

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great version of an already great device

I've been playing Nintendo games since 1988 when my parents first bought me a Nintendo Entertainment System. We've had our ups and downs in that time (virtual boy I'm looking at you) but overall I find their kit a delight. First it was a present for my wife. I had a Black Stock 3DS some time after launch and love it. Having used this system for Kid Icarus: Uprising and Star Fox 64 3D, I can say that the system has been improved in almost every way. The screens on this thing are huge. I haven't had a chance to test it out because I rarely buy electronics anywhere other than Revain, so I've never been close to a demo booth. When she opened it I was shocked at the size. As you may already know, there is no resolution, although the screens are larger. It's kind of a downvote because it means there's a bit of flashy pixelation. In my opinion, this is no reason to refuse a purchase. I doubt most people will even notice unless you've compared devices side-by-side. The system feels solid and everything looks the same as the original 3ds except for the Start, Select and Home buttons. They feel better because they're real plastic buttons, not plastic-covered buttons like the original 3ds. The only real downside is the speakers. They aren't as loud and don't sound as good as the original 3ds. Again, this is a minor complaint. However, I use headphones 80% of the time when playing 3ds, so this rarely affects me and I'm sure many of you are in the same situation. Overall the system looks nice if you like color and it's a solid upgrade from the stock 3ds. I will be buying another 3ds XL to replace my stock once the color I'm interested in comes out.

Pros
  • Enjoyable
Cons
  • Legacy model
