This is a product that doesn't really know what it wants to be. On the one hand, colorful lights are flashing, suggesting that this is another party speaker for 20-year-olds who plays a lot of hip-hop or house music. On the other hand, the digital signal processing was done by Meridian, a very high-end audiophile company. They do stereo in the new Jaguar, so their regular work is definitely not aimed at a 20-year-old audience. So what is it? Think a jaguar rather than a house party. If you're looking for thick, oddly boosted bass, this is definitely not the speaker for you. If you're looking for a small speaker that will rattle windows, this speaker isn't for you either. Even a few of them don't get that loud, although at least you can crank them full blast without distortion. I think the only real nod to the crowd of speakers is the light show. This, too, is a kind of half-hearted effort. The lights seem to struggle with precise syncing with the music and after the initial wow factor you'll want to turn them off as it's just annoying. Instead, it's for people (of all ages) who really care about a reasonably accurate reproduction of the source material in a relatively small package. I bought a pair of these PK5s and wired them together to play in stereo. To be honest I was blown away by how good they sound. The sound signature is rich, nuanced and very neutral. Even the bass, which should be just rubbish for something so small, is well integrated into the overall sonic signature. Obviously the guys at Meridian know what they're doing, it sounds like something a lot bigger and more expensive than it actually is. I bought them for casual, undemanding patio listening. Imagine a morning coffee with some jazz in the background, a kitchen speaker, etc. I didn't expect that much for the price. But these are much better. I think a couple of them could easily be your only stereo in a small apartment where space is at a premium. You are so good. Good luck finding something else of this quality for this little money. A pair of these speakers for as little as $100 is just a steal. The only thing I don't really like is that you have to rewire the two speakers together every time you need stereo. To do this you have to press the button behind the door for two seconds every time you turn it on. No big deal. Oh, and if you have an iPhone, the app that provides additional controls for the light show is rubbish, it doesn't work at all. I think it currently has about 250 one star reviews on the App Store. That's not something I'm too concerned about either. Get some while you can. Something tells me that at such a crazy price they won't be available forever.
