Excellent technique, very well thought out, worth every penny

I had great doubts if it was worth the price. This is an instant read thermometer. I already have an instant read thermometer. Can you really make an instant-read thermometer that costs five times more than a regular thermometer? Yes. Yes you can. It's a big thermometer beep. It's almost certainly more than you think if you've never stuck to it before. It feels like it's built like a tank. But aside from that, what makes it worth the price? 1) Fast. My old thermometer takes about 5-8 seconds to set a reading. Is 2-3 seconds really that much of a difference? Yes, definitely when you're standing over glowing coals or practically sticking your head in a red-hot furnace. This thermometer reads so fast that sometimes it doesn't even feel like two seconds. The first few times I used it, I actually sat and waited for the temperature to change further before realizing it was done. Excellent! 2) Smart. When the thermometer is opened (by rotating the pin outwards) the LED lights up and aligns itself. That last feature is awesome: if you're not careful and insert the stylus with the grip "upside down", the LED display will reorient itself. I was surprised at how often I did this and how often I *didn't* have to crane my neck to get a reading. 3) Exactly. Maximum. ' said Nuff. 4) Rich feature set. There is a hook hole in case you want to hang it up. It has a magnet in case you need to attach it somewhere while you're fiddling with the hot pan. It has a nice soft feel if you hold it with dexterous hands. This is a very simple and very well thought out design. They've put a lot of thought into this thermometer and I can't recommend it highly enough as an upgrade to a cheap $10-20 design if you cook a lot.
