I bought this unit and use it all day as an AV technician. The POE test, continuity function, and cable length are all worth their price, but the toner function, or "scanning" when using alligator clips, is rubbish. The tint/scan function works well when working with just ethernet cabling because it can use all 4 pairs, but using alligator clips from RJ11 to 8 pin just doesn't get the connection right. I couldn't identify any wires using this method. As I said, Ethernet works well, but the audio is a little quieter, and I've found the digital method to work best. However, I really like the pass-through function. The photo I uploaded was taken while troubleshooting a problematic WiFi hotspot. The tester showed me what the problem with the cable was and what exactly was wrong with the cable. I could see that pairs 4-5 and 7-8 were fine and I was able to get the AP working with those wires until a new wire was pulled into place. Without a tester I would have to check the integrity of each of the 8 wires, which would take much longer. Also, I think I could theoretically use the length function to determine exactly how far a broken wire is from me, but I haven't. Don't try this part. I would actually combine this device with a stand alone toner such as These include the cheap Chinese brand units shown here, which cost around $25 and come in blue or orange, or if you're on a bigger budget, a Fluke pro3000 or pro3000f60 toner. I did this.
