Buy this to add a second wire lead on top. Wi-Fi isn't always stable enough for scaling and other video conferencing and gaming. The wife uses the computer to take online language courses and the son wanted his games to run smoothly. Since manually switching the cable line was quickly becoming obsolete, I saw this at Revain and gave it a try. Install these splitters first on either side of the existing cat5 line that runs from the router (bottom) to the desktop (top). The desktop is connected with no problems. with line 1 on both splitters. After confirming that the first line worked, I connected a second additional cable from port 2 of the router to the splitter 2 connector, and then connected the laptop's connection cable to port 2 of the splitter connector above. Temporarily disabled router port 1 to ensure signals are isolated. After everything was working fine, I bought short Category 6 patch cords (each 12 inches long) so I could manage the cables better since I don't need 3-foot cables from the router to the splitter. Signals by running Port 1 and Port 2 from the router to two different computers, using 1 existing Category 5 cable in the wall.
