Review on πŸ–¨οΈ Efficient Epson FastFoto FF-680W: High-Speed Wireless Photo and Document Scanning System in Black by Bobby Posner

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Matching the hype from Epson.

Updated at the end of the day on January 2, 2019. I have completed 4000 scans of all types of photographs. Many were black and white in a square format. These are photos from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I've also scanned many documents of all sizes and from different sources. Everything is scanned with no problems. None of the photos were damaged. All jams were caused by user error. === In most cases the "enhanced" version was much better than the "unmodified". However, the unmodified version was always very close to the original. === This scanner is definitely a keeper. I scanned about 2000 photos and had a few problems. Most of them were caused by user error i.e. trying to scan a polaroid without changing the photo type, scanning a photo with a tear or the back of the photo starting to peel off. Most of the time I was able to complete the scan by changing the photo type or scanning one photo at a time.===One photo was so corrupted that I had to use media.===However, I was able to scan all the photos. (Only about 10,000 left.) ================= FastFoto observations:===1) Be careful not to press the cancel button after you have fixed a paper jam or error to have. Once I had to rescan about 30 photos when I accidentally clicked Cancel instead of Continue. === 2) FastFoto saves a list of previous objects that can be selected via the dropdown list. As a matter of fact, as others have reported, it is not possible to use FastFoto to edit the list. === It turns out that on Mac there is a way to edit/delete items in the related list. FastFoto saves the list in the settings. You can maintain a list using a settings editor, i.e. the Xcode editor or the PLIST editor (available in the Mac App Store). If you decide to edit the list, make a backup copy first. Editing or deleting the wrong item can confuse FastFoto. FastFoto preferences file: ===/Library/Preferences/com.epson.scan.Epson-FastFoto.plist=== and enter the "subjects" file.===3) The thumbnail size cannot be changed. The thumbnails are so small on my 27 inch monitor that a photo with the wrong orientation can easily be overlooked. FastFoto's auto-rotate feature is problematic, ie sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, so you need to check the images to make sure they're in the right orientation. Small miniatures are very uncomfortable. I found that I didn't use them at all. I immediately imported the processed scans into Lightroom CC Classic and reoriented them to LR. ============ The FF-680W is my fifth Epson scanner. DC-30, V500, V600, EU-300W, FF-680W). The V600 is a replacement for the V500 which died after 9 years of intensive use. (I'll be more careful with the V600.) With the exception of the V500 and DS-30 (replaced by the ES-300W), they are all still in use and still excellent scanners. 2. January 2019 ========= USB connection to my iMac. I have not yet used a WiFi connection. === I received the FF-680W this afternoon. In a few hours, including unboxing and setup, I was able to scan several hundred 1.25"x2" photos. (Didn't expect a photo of this size to be scanned but they did) up to 5x7. No misfeeds. === I had all enhancements turned on, set the density to 600 dpi, and I also saved the original and copied the back if there was anything written on it. For almost all images, the enhanced image was better. I would say that the improvements made by the FastFoto system are similar to the "Auto" feature in Lightroom Classic CC. In other words, this is usually a good place to start. === The only problem I had was auto-rotation when scanning documents with Epson Scan 2. Auto-rotation worked in most cases, but sometimes documents were rotated that didn't need to be rotated and some that did were not filmed. === Now I'm going to make several thousand scans of photos dating back to 1918. If I encounter any problems I will update this review. and I also kept the original and copied the back if there was anything written on it. For almost all images, the enhanced image was better.
