Review on Ultimate 56HP Data Internal Modem: Unmatched Performance and Reliability by Justin Frazier

Avoid better dates like the plague

I bought this modem a few years ago because of the price and the discount, thought it would be nice to have one in reserve. Installed on my new P-IV ECS system (XP-MCE; 3GB with 1MB RAM). After installing after adding, after the system was working fine with DSL, the installation software failed to install. I let Windows handle it, but then I had two modems listed and a "Control Panel" "v92" that was supposed to be for this model. It stops working when another PCI card is added and it takes a lot of effort to get it working. I've updated the board drivers and what can be found on the Best Data site for updated drivers (with no real info on how to do this). After it stopped working the last time I gave up and bought Hayes (Zoom). This wasn't my first Best Data modem (it was my third); but I will never buy a BD product again. As far as I remember, the configuration was ALWAYS a bit problematic. In my experience, you can also get faster connection speeds from another manufacturer. In fact, as a 56k device, the similar A56FW wasn't much of an improvement over the 28.8k model it was meant to replace. Anyway, I guess I'll keep it in case someone is using an older OS and needs it but won't have it on one of my computers. Get out of trouble. You might also prefer a model (without the HSP) that doesn't use communications processing software.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • too stupid
