Okay. I realize the name is a bit dramatic, but it accurately captures my deepest feelings for this shoe. And I'll say they ended up in the trash (no kidding). I don't normally write bad reviews but I felt it was necessary for this particular shoe. Now about why these are shoes from hell. I bought these shoes because I needed new hiking shoes. My old Colombian sneakers were worn out and I had a week-long hike planned for spring break. After doing a little research and reading reviews of different brands and lines of hiking shoes, I settled on these. Which I now deeply regret. The price was hard to swallow, especially when they didn't fit, but they got such great reviews I thought it was worth the risk. were amazing! They fit perfectly, didn't need any breaks, had enough ankle support (I'm overpronating so ankle support is very important to me) and they looked really cool too. I was very happy with my purchase. At the beginning. Moving on to ACTUAL use and wearing when I went on a trip. I'm usually a fairly active hiker - the average hike for me is usually around 10 miles over fairly rough terrain. So I definitely checked them out. The first day my hike started great, the boots were very comfortable and I was very happy with the ankle support on the rocky terrain, but after about 7 miles of my hike they started to hurt. Like, really, really painful. There is a part around my ankle that feels like a vise gripping the back of my ankle to the point where it was excruciatingly painful. I considered turning around and dropping the suitcase but it took forever to get where I was going and it seemed a waste of time to turn back after such a short walk. Looking back, I should have just come back. When I finished my hike I almost couldn't get back to the car because the shoes were so painful. The grip on my ankle got worse and my toes and feet were killing me. When I finally took them off I had bruises around my ankles from where they pinched me so hard (I even tied them loosely on a hike to try to take pressure off my ankle) and blisters on my little toes from all of them the scratches. it was in the toe area of the shoe. Yes, I wore wool socks - I always do. The second day I figured maybe they just needed a break and tried again the next day. Even putting it on was very painful because my ankles were still very sore and sensitive from yesterday. I took my Columbia boots on this hike, just in case, and I'm glad I did. I felt the same as the day before, only worse because everything was already hurting. In the middle of my hike I couldn't take the painful pinched ankle anymore and switched to my Columbias. I kept trying them during my week-long hike, but wore them less and less as the week went on, simply because I couldn't take the pain of pinching. By the end of the trip I'd run about 40-50 miles in these shoes (maybe a little more) and they've never gotten better for me. Big disappointment. When I got home they went straight into the bin and I have no regrets. I ended up ordering several different pairs of boots from different companies to try out as I was now looking for a new one again. a pair of walking shoes. In the end I really liked the Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX and they fit me perfectly. I recently returned from a 2 week hike and had no problems the whole time. After trying this shoe I was very wary of buying another Salomon shoe. I may try other shoes from them in the future, but definitely not any time soon. If you choose these shoes, I will probably go up a half size to accommodate your feet for the toe box swelling and tightness. I'm pretty sure that's why I got blisters on my toes. At first they fit perfectly, but when my feet swelled during a hike, the shoes were too tight. Just for reference, I usually wear a regular size 12.
