Review on Sonos Beam - Smart TV Sound Bar with Built-in Amazon Alexa - Black by Malik Berry

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great in 5.1, 5.0, or 3.1 configurations

I had a Sony receiver with compact Polk RM6750 speakers and a subwoofer that sounded great, but I've been looking for a soundbar for years for the simplicity and visual appeal. I bought the Sony HT-ST5000 shortly after it was released and returned it a few days later. Dialogue was particularly awful, and the lack of surround channels made it sound really flat. I was initially disappointed that Sonos released a small soundbar instead of a "Playbar 2", but after many third-party suppliers I decided to try the Beam with a subwoofer and two Ones. Review sites have rated Beam particularly well. It sounds perfect. Together they sound just as good and even better than my previous wired system. Movies and music shine on it. The Beam itself sounds full and produces a wide soundstage, although it's important to note that it produces little bass, so I wouldn't use the Beam alone unless it's hooked up to an additional TV in a very small room. Add One and you get much better bass. Add a subwoofer and you have rumbles of thunder. If you can only get one I'd say get two Ones so you can get surround sound too. Note. I mainly use the system in my 10x12ft living room, but it will easily fill my 700sqm apartment with music. ft. Dialogues in films are always very clear and sonorous. I don't use the Dialog Enhancer either - it's not necessary. Night mode works well, but I'll probably never use it. Alexa works fine. Microphones can hear me speaking around the corner in my kitchen from 20 feet away in a low pitched tone, which was amazing. Big fan of the app. Here you can adjust all speaker levels or enable enhancements. This allows you to play music from iPad. I just want you to ask Alexa to play XYZ from iPad like you can with other music services. First you need to start playback from the iPad in the app and then you can tell Alexa to pause/play or skip the song. I think I experienced some audio lag only with XBox One X Blu Ray. I guess because it's very minor and only noticeable in film C and then film mostly CGI I can't trust any of them. But there is no lag when streaming apps on the XBox, apps from my TV, or my FIOS cable box. The Xbox and cable box are fed separately through my x900e and then via HDMI to the beam. Need some more Netflix DVDs to try it. It's nice to be able to control the system volume with Alexa or the TV remote. Basically, I like the system. Intended to replace the Beam when Sonos releases the Playbar 2 in later years, but it's not really necessary. I am very happy with it. I'd suggest if you can do with two ones, a subwoofer or definitely both - although it lacks the bass needed for movies and music alone. Update: 7-31 - I was watching another Blu-ray on Xbox and there was no noticeable audio lag. Update: 8-29 - There was a large audio delay on Blu-ray via XBox. Bought a new Bluray player - so far no sound lag. I wonder if there were only DTS movies that the Xbox had to convert to Dolby. There is no converter on the new player.

Pros
  • Compact Size - At just 25.6 inches, Beam won't cling to furniture or block your TV.
Cons
  • It's not as good as it says it is
