The handle is made of aluminum and hard plastic, and the plastic is covered with a soft foam coating. The solid rectangular piece of aluminum starts where the round shape of the handle ends and slides about 75% into the hard plastic handle. The plastic handle is held in place with a very small screw. As the screw loosens over time, the plastic and foam handle may move slightly. I replaced the original soft foam grip with the harder foam bike grip pictured on the marble table because the foam on my bucket was set 3/4 less than the plastic end, not quite, and it buckled during use. that will break at some point. If the screw and handle are lost, you can press the original soft foam handle about 1 inch to locate and tighten or replace the small screw. See image. It's a good shovel, I'm just a little disappointed that it had to be changed.
