After moving into a house with very hard water, I waited several years before purchasing a conventional water softening system. Since I'm a gardener and don't want to "salt" my plants, I bypassed this system for a good six months a year. For these reasons, my showers and appliances, my dishwasher and toilets have developed significant calcification. I gave up the toilets in my home, simply reconciling that visitors would be appalled at their calcified and unhygienic appearance. About two months ago I bought and installed Scalewatcher from Revain. Here is a summary of my experience.1. Shower: The very first morning after installing the device, I noticed that the water in the shower was getting soft, although the usual system worked in "bypassโ mode for several months. The "softness" of the Scalewatcher was about halfway between the softness of my hard water and my normally softened water. After a couple of weeks, I noticed that the normally dull spout on my shower tray was beginning to shine and the spout, which required soaking in vinegar, was working better and showing noticeably less calcification. After two months, there are no more limescale deposits on the tub walls and the shower head is getting better every day.2. Dishwasher. My dishwasher has noticeably scaled up over the years and I found it pretty much useless. If the water was not softened, a crusty white film would appear on the glasses and cutlery after a full cycle. To keep the dishwasher as unusable as possible, I periodically cleaned the holes in the water sprayer with a toothpick or skewer. Also, I cleaned it occasionally by running it with a bottle of vinegar for a few minutes and then letting it sit for half an hour before continuing the wash cycle. None of this worked very well, and it was frustrating enough that I ended up washing most of the dishes by hand. The manual that came with the Scalewatcher warns that your dishwasher will actually run LESS than it did for the first few weeks as previous limescale deposits are thrown into the water. To give the device a chance to do its job, I continued to use the dishwasher, then rinsed glasses and cutlery as needed. I don't know if my dishwasher's performance got worse than before, but there was definitely a time when the dishwasher kept leaving a film on my dishes. Then a few weeks later I noticed that the back of my stainless steel interior was starting to shine. I forgot there was something shiny inside this device! After two months of operation, the dishwasher began washing dishes without repeated rinsing and wiping of glasses and cutlery. The dishwasher isn't working as well as I would like it to with tap water, but it's slowly getting better every day. toilets. The calcification is gradually removed. It hasn't passed in two months, but much better. For the past two months I've refused to use a cleaning brush or anything just to see what the Scalewatcher does on its own. Again there was a noticeable and welcome improvement but I can't report that Scalewatcher has given me shiny and spotless toilets. I know this might be an unreasonable expectation, but I'm so excited I plan to wait another month or two to see if it happens! All in all, I can only recommend this device. It's expensive, but the cost of salt increases over time; Carrying salt into the house is unpleasant; salt will kill your plants; and I'm sure that conventional plasticizers have a negative impact on the environment and sewage treatment plants. There are cheaper and more expensive devices out there, but I was motivated to try the Scalewatcher for three main reasons: 1) They have an almost unconditional guarantee; (2) the few studies I could find that tested this technology were done on Scalewatcher; and (3) Scalewatcher was apparently the originator of this technology for industrial use, so I figured they would have had more experience to get it right. I will say that installing coils can be a bit of a challenge. Technically, this isn't a difficult project, but it does require patience and skill. It's easier when you have someone who can pass you on the spins etc. You can ask a friend who knows plumbing to help you find the right spot on your line to place the coils.
