As some of the 1 star reviews say this isn't the easiest place to start, consider using a lighter. The nice thing is that when they start to work, they burn hotter than Hades. Although there is a small channel on one side to help them start with a match, a lighter or even a small butane/propane torch is the best way to start them. I used to use those long grill lighters but I burned them up too quickly. I now use a small propane line from Berzomatic, which is about $15 at Home Depot. It starts with a click of the starter, and every 2 years I need a $4 tank of gas. It's a lot more economical. Speaking of economy, I recommend you cut these blocks into quarters as using a whole block to start a fire is just plain wasteful. I use an old butcher knife I bought at the store for dollars ten years ago and it goes through these things with a simple squeeze. That means a box of 10 appetizers will light my wood stove 40 times. I recently bought a box of 30 from Revain and got 120 lights out of them. And if you're being really mean, you can easily cut blocks into 5 or even 6 pieces to stretch them out even more, but that's more work than I'm willing to put into words. In general, these blocks will work for you if you use a lighter instead of a match (seriously, who else uses matches?).
