Review on Streamline Smart Card Reading with Identiv SCR3500 Smartfold Smart Card Reader by Elmito Yeager

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reinforced design compared to the previous version, branding is more visible

SCR3500 is not normally approved by the government, but it is a card reader that can be used by any PIV and CAC card is bought by users because it offers everything in a much more compact yet sturdier package. My previous SCR3500 lasted six years with very poor handling and finally broke the wing this winter. The replacement has a similar shape, but this version has much better wing reinforcement and better orientation for right-side-up card insertion. The built-in software is protected from damage and folding and unfolding on the go is very quick and convenient. Unlike the teardrop versions, it takes up little space and doesn't have the latency issues of the older teardrop designs. This is highly recommended if you need to mount a workstation on the fly, as the software is mandatory on each workstation without taking up too much space or worrying about positioning. It is approved for use in general circumstances, and the trivial cost pays off many times more than a tear. The crack must be transferred to your computer, where the attachment must never be moved or left behind. One downside is that the branding is extremely noticeable for this iteration, while it's been muted in another. That makes it a little less "professional" than some of the more subdued designs for the office, I think. The previous version had small black markings on the bottom, but this one has a very bright red INDENTIV lettering on the front.

Pros
  • Compatible with all major smart cards and related industry standards
Cons
  • Hard to say
