OK. Here I tell "I remember” stories. I remember a 2.5GB hard drive (we called it DASD) attached to the mainframe and sold for $250,000 plus another $250,000 for the controller. I sold her. Fast forward 30 years. 2TB for less than $100 and it fits in my short cargo bag? what is this magic I needed a replacement for my Seagate external hard drive that had just died for me. It was four times the size (at least) and died when the power supply stopped working. It does not require a separate power supply (USB powered). The hallmark of hard drives these days is that their storage capacity is huge and the prices are insanely low. This is bad. Think of them as disposable items. Backup, backup, backup. I can't overestimate that. If you don't drive a car for three years, everything is fine. This is my backup drive. I moved my home videos from my internal drive to an external drive and am using Super Duper on another drive to back up my internal (main) drive. This drive is used for backing up my movies and for Time Machine. I plugged it right out of the box and a window popped up asking if I'd like to use it as a Time Machine drive. Cute! It's the ultimate time machine and I love how they make it so easy. If you're using it for Time Machine, you're done. But first I had to split it because I use 1TB for Time Machine and 1TB for movie backups. Separation was quick, easy and painless. As I write this, he is performing his first Time Machine backup. I don't know anything about speed or reliability, and I don't particularly care. For a time machine, it doesn't matter how fast it is. And to back up my movies if (not if) that drive fails, I replace it and just copy my backup from another drive. I've lost many drives over the years, but I haven't lost any data. The speed and reliability of the backup drives don't matter. They are backed up in the background and you should always have at least one other copy of your data. If it's dead, throw it away and buy another one. The three-year warranty on the $100 disc makes me very happy. If it lasts 3 years, it's less than $35 a year. It's worth it.
