I usually buy my yarn in skeins (rather than skeins), and while skeins don't technically need to be wound into balls or cakes like skeins, I find this reduces the chance of things getting tangled beyond repair. all had very good reviews, although I suspect the joy of switching to a winder, having done it manually is likely to make many reviewers overestimate the quality of the winder itself. I needed a model that I could use for even the largest amount of yarn I've ever bought - Lily Sugar 'n Cream Big Ball (608 yards) as shown in the picture - but still good for winding up leftovers and small strands. I was ready to settle on a similar model from Royal when I found this one. Many, many reviews of various winders have noted the noise that metal gear winders make (similar to a beater I think, or even louder). I often work late nights when the rest of the world is asleep, so the metal gears weren't ideal. When I stumbled across this Stanwood model with nylon gears, I decided to try it. When I unpacked the box I found a good quality winder, which was easy to assemble, just using a regular Phillips head screwdriver to attach the outer arm. I bolted it to a table and tried it with one of my pathetic hand-rolled balls I've worked with and found the handle a bit tight and difficult to turn. This was easily fixed by loosening the screw at the bottom of the core by following the instructions that came with it. When I did that, it worked great. All my old balls turned into cakes quickly. Then I started with another 608 yard cotton thread, which I wound up in less than 10 minutes. Yes, five minutes versus over an hour of manual labor! I have found that it is often useful to roll the cake twice. The first time I do this, the tension tends to change as I move yarn from a store-bought skein onto a spool, especially at the end of the skein where it tends to tangle. On the second wrap it wraps evenly and nicely as it comes out of the center of the cake I wrapped in the first stage. By simply holding the resulting yarn (not tightly) between the fingers of your left hand and twisting it with your right, it takes no time at all to create a cake beautiful enough for any wedding. ;-) I have spun various DK (3), worsted (4), bulky (5) and super bulky (6) yarns from 100% wool, 100% acrylic, 100% cotton and wool. acrylic blends. I haven't had any problems with any of them. Working with them couldn't be easier. When you're done wrapping, find a way to secure the outer end (tuck it under another strand, wrap it around, etc.) before removing it, then hold the end in the middle . Pull the entire cake from the core. . If you don't hold the middle, it tends to sink in and (maybe) reach the bottom instead. You will probably have a small amount of yarn at the beginning that "sticks out" a little at the top, but if you pull from the middle you'll get over it in no time and the yarn will be nice and even afterwards. Cakes are neatly stored, do not fall over and are easy to process. I believe this wrap will last a very long time and there is nothing I don't like about it.
