Review on πŸ”§ Optimized Mikuni Primer Kit by Scott Kulothungan

Our WaveRunner isn't hard to start anymore

I have just rebuilt 2 WaveRunner 3s (two stroke single Mikuni carburetors) that we bought new 27 years ago. These carburetors have a choke but no primer. I had to remove the carburetors, drill a hole in the thick part of the castings about midway between the throttle body and the throttle body, and gently tap the supplied fitting. I installed the primers by drilling four holes in the air cleaner covers and securing them with two zip ties around the primers and through the air cleaner cover. I added a third band just below the top band and right around the primer to prevent the primer from being pulled out with the plunger. If you're used to doing the maintenance yourself, this is an easy install and the hardest part is finding a good priming spot. While I have to open the engine cover to use the primer, it needs to be opened before starting to ensure all fumes are released. Two installation recommendations -> The instructions say to install the fuel line from the reserve tank. Our WaveRunner's fuel filter is located behind the Run/Off/Reserve switch, so the primer uses unfiltered fuel. Locate the inline fuel filter (I used a translucent lawn mower filter available at an auto parts store) and connect it between the tank and the included tee. I also purchased a 1/4" clear fuel line to install before and after the filter to ensure fuel is flowing. My first primer didn't work in one day and SMART Powersports quickly sent a replacement. This happened before I installed the filter and since then I've been wondering if there were any particles in the old fuel line that could have caused the primer problem, even though I did thoroughly clean the tanks. > Although the instructions are very minimal I would recommend using at least one zip tie on each fuel port. The supplied fuel line is very secure and would probably be fine without it, but all the original Yamaha fuel lines were bolted to them and I didn't want to risk a leak. These WaveRunners have always been very difficult to cold start. I'm experimenting with the number of pumps to get it working and it looks like 8 is my magic number. Now they start immediately from the cold and without suction. I have an old 1973 Honda that I bought new and restored a few years ago and my wife has a 2006 Suzuki, both with throttle bodies. They are also very difficult to start and I will order twin carb kits for them.
