it keeps the kitty litter on the matt and when you step on it you really do not feel the kitty litter under foot. i have two XXL because I just like a lot of space to be covered. adheres to floor very well. take it outside, dump remaining litter in garbage then wash off with a little dishwashing soap and a hose. I put them together in my dryer on AIR and dry for 10 minutes and they did fine. love them so far. i've had them about a month. put my smaller one under my cat's food area.
