I am very happy with this table mat because it is very thick so I am sure it will protect my new dining table. I can't judge heat resistance. I would never put a hotplate directly on it because I don't think it would take more than a minute, but why would anyone put a hotplate directly on it? I use trivets or hot pads for all casserole dishes etc. My family makes a lot of fondue and raclette and I think they can generate some heat, but both electric fondue pots and raclette grills have "legs" that elevate them a bit. not much, and the grill is well insulated from below, so I don't think there's a lot of heat directly on the table. After a few raclette nights, however, there have been no problems so far. The fondue pots are coming this weekend and I expect the table stand to be fine. I will update this review if there are any issues after the fondue night but I don't expect this to be a problem.
