I live in a badly renovated apartment. My washer/dryer unit needed replacing as the dryer started leaving rust streaks on my clothes and first they brought me a replacement that didn't work at all, then they brought me a working but TERRIBLE, full of foreign dirt, lint and caked blue detergent. The washing machine was closed for a long time and although it is not a front loader, it smelled absolutely disgusting. The liquid detergent got moldy and then dried out and formed a crust. Fuuuu! I've thought about whether it's worth fighting with management further and decided to take care of it myself. (Yeah, I know I'd rather move than endure this bullshit. It's just a lot of trouble.) Tried running a hot wash, which helped a bit. Bleach helped too. Vinegar didn't seem to do much. It got better after my home tricks, but still useless. Finally, Affresh fixed the mess. I got the pills and wipes and in between I managed to get rid of the gross. So if you have a disgusting college boy level in the washing machine, this will work.
