I bought this in hopes that I could use it for martial arts performances and judging from the past few days I'm pretty sure I can. The cane is definitely stronger than I thought it would be and if you tighten it after opening it it will hold its shape very well. I was trying to see how strong I could make it by twisting it tight and if you shorten it to about 2/3 and twist tight enough it's actually as strong as thin steel tubing and could easily hurt someone. At full draw it can definitely flip if you swing it too hard, but it should hold up well enough for a simple and flashy martial arts display. It's essentially a long steel spring, so be extremely careful when opening it so you don't aim at it. Point at someone (especially yourself!) or something you don't want to destroy. It opens VERY quickly and can fly out of your hand if you're not careful, and that strong metal handle on the end will punch through drywall in your house or apartment. I found it easier to press down on the handle and then quickly throw the spiral stick up horizontally so it opens in mid-air and doesn't "bounce" anything. As other reviewers have said, it's tricky to figure out how to approach at first, and you'll need to play around with it a bit to get a feel for it. Twisting it on both ends to loosen the spool when pressure is applied makes it much easier to close, and subsequent attempts will be easier as you learn how to loosen and tighten the rod's turns. Gloves help as the thin steel can irritate your hands. I do have a small complaint that the gold plating on both ends wears off fairly easily, but for the price I won't mind. All in all it was definitely a good buy. I can even get a second one as a backup or share it with my martial arts classmates.
