I bought this for my 55" TCL Roku TV. This TV has a USB 2.0 port that allows me to connect an external hard drive. The TV's media player reads .mkv and .mp4 (x264/x265) video files. I've found that the TV doesn't always recognize the hard drive when it's a USB 3.0 drive. This is completely random and there is no way to immediately tell if a hard drive is working by plugging it into the TV. This expansion takes the guesswork out. If you add this to your TV and then plug an external USB 3.0 drive into this extension, the TV will recognize the hard drive every time. I currently have a Seagate 8TB external hard drive that was not recognized, but the TV was able to see my old Seagate 2TB hard drive. I bought this extension because I read that it solves the detection problem and it really does. .
