Review on YGY Waterproof Protection Backpacking Survival by Rick Booth

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not bad, but it would be better without metal connectors.

Benefits: Ripstop fabric, winter weight, reflective corners. Cons: very heavy metal ends, non-reflective stretch marks, no clip to hang the bag. I bought this raincoat because, to be honest, I didn't see any other that I liked. The first thing that struck me was how difficult it seemed. The material itself is a fairly dense winter ripstop weave. I don't know why sellers don't emphasize more that this is a ripstop. I had to sift through the description to realize it was only mentioned once. it was a bit windy when i installed it and my girlfriend who has a real ultralight raincoat had trouble getting it to blow. To be honest I like that it's more durable. The only BIG issue I fixed was the relatively heavy metal mounting points. In my humble opinion there's no need for it, at least not if you go camping. They're also cheap steel, and I was able to cut them with just three pulls of a hacksaw. Plastic would probably be just as good, but not as heavy or prone to rusting. Before my modifications the whole thing including the storage bag weighed 2lb 10oz / 1.1kg. After my modifications I lost 5 ounces / 140 grams. It doesn't seem like much, but you can feel it. These little black metal clips you see in the picture were added by me and they only weigh 1.5 grams each. Installation was very quick and the way I attached the guy ropes was also easy with my hiking poles to use to help me get in and out of the hammock (I'm 6ft tall). I *really* like that the design has a certain versatility, although I'll probably only use it to cover a hammock. Because you never know what you might encounter in the field. Where the cords attach these dots are reflective, which is nice, but the cords themselves are not reflective. They weren't impossible to see, but neither were they easy to spot in the dark against the pine forest floor as a backdrop. The next step for me is to replace these cords with reflective ones. Also, attaching a clip to the bag meant I had a handy place to stash all the other small bags that held my top blanket, bottom blanket, pillow, etc. The hammock in the photos is a Winner Outfitters double width hammock. also sold by Revain (with improved and significantly lighter 12KN wire bolt carabiners). All in all, a decent hiking raincover with a few modifications that almost anyone can make.
