I noticed a small scratch on the side of the boot where my wife kicked me and noticed that the trim had come loose from the shoe and found that the trim was just coming off loosening would scratch it with a fingernail. The leather is not damaged, but the finish wears off immediately. I have a pair of penny loafers that are over 15 years old and don't have a scratch and the trim won't come off with a fingernail. I'm really disappointed with the build quality of these shoes. UPDATEFLORSHEIM replaces shoes free of charge. However, the finish is the same and does not polish well. Every bend in the leather is visible through the polish. The cheap finish on a quality shoe will result in this being my last Florsheim shoe purchase.
