Works right out of the box, so be careful if you're in sunlight and haven't put it in the water yet, because the pump will work and that could mess it up if there's no water. Solution? Turn the unit upside down until you get to the birdbath or whatever water source you're using. The instructions weren't designed for engineering challenged folks like myself. When I read the back of the limited instructions, I thought the pump had to dangle down in the water. Nope! Just leave the back alone until you want to clean it. To start using it,, it's just a matter of what nozzle you want to use. I have a small birdbath, and when I picked one nozzle, the wind carried the spray out of the bath's perimeter, draining the birdbath. In other words, it worked great! Too good. So I picked the small nozzle and now it works fine. The water spray stays within the area of the birdbath. I love this thing! By the way, if you actually want shy birds to use the birdbath while the unit is working, I suggest NO nozzle. In that case, water just burbles up, keeping the water areated but not freaking the feathered friends out. Have fun!
