This 55mm oil filter wrench is specially designed for Mercury 4-stroke marine engines. The "wrench" is about the same thickness as the filter. When attempting to remove a factory installed mercury filter, this wrench easily slips past the flats. Pressing pressure against the filter doesn't help. If the filter is too tight from the factory, a filter wrench should be enough to break the seal. Unfortunately, the return period has expired. Gave away $10. UPDATE: After the initial check, I drilled two holes in the filter wrench and then put two sheet metal screws in the drilled holes and into the bottom of the oil filter. By pressing the wrench and turning the ratchet, the bolts pierced the oil filter, but the filter stayed in place. On the last pull I went the old fashioned way and pierced the filter with a heavy long screwdriver and twisted it, tearing the metal of the filter again. One last try with a screwdriver, constant pressure on the screwdriver until it clicks, and the filter finally started to move. After removing the filter key, Quicksilver installed a new filter. Under ideal conditions, this filter key would only work marginally. Although the wrench material is thicker than the filter housing, tolerances are still tight and can easily slip off with moderate resistance. Rating increased from 1 star to 3 stars, it's still a weak design but it will work. As for mercury putting the oil filter on a tight disgrace. The filter was installed either dry on the gasket or with an impact wrench. In decades of removing oil filters, this has been the hardest part. The engine itself is superb.
