I bought this unit to digitize 1000 photos taken over the last 20+ years. I also use the scanner to read text from my school books. This is a small and light scanner. You probably wouldn't want your little kids operating this fairly lightweight device. Because of its size, you can easily keep it near your work place and take it with you for quick scans. If your computer is running Windows Vista, you need updates for Arcsoft Photostudio and OmniPage SE, which are provided on CD. Canon has a website that discusses Vista and software updates. Speaking of CDs; After installing the applications, make sure you run them before saving the CD! At least one of the installations is an "Installer" installation that asks for a CD to install the program (?). Pros: The OCR software works pretty well. This is my first experience with OCR software. Captures text content and arranges it nicely, clearly marking undefined parts of the scan for manual correction. - small size - powered only by USB; no extra cable to carry - price is right :) - multi-scan automatically creates separate scanned images of multiple items, which saves a lot of time Cons - it's a little noisy, you won't want to use it in the library - software is not visa ready , fixed, visit canonusa.com This is a good unit, although you'll probably want to allow 2 hours to set it up and "play around" with the software. The software works well, but installing on Vista is a bit tricky. This is a worthy "first" scanner. As light and small as it is, you can "go digital" by digitizing all your documents, photos, and more.
