The experience was amazing: my project, which I am working with as an artist-in-residence at the gallery, is very personal to me since it explores my identity of being black female in this society that has been oppressive historically and continues to be so today. It also addresses issues of representation, blackness and whiteness/whitewashing in art. My work engages these topics through performance, video and text. The artists are all involved in the process, from curating their own showrooms, to presenting workshops and discussions around race relations in the contemporary context. They have been incredibly supportive and engaged with my projects in ways that make sense for them (and thus mine). This is something I really appreciate about cyan--they truly care about making sure I feel supported throughout my residency!
