I've been using Instant Ocean Reef Crystals for several years and have always had good results. I needed to buy more salt for a water change and my chilled colleague suggested Red Sea Coral Pro Salt. It's a bit pricey but he loved it so I decided to give it a try. It has been in my tank for less than a week but the difference from my previous salt is amazing. 1) Instant Ocean takes about 4 hours to dissolve after mixing. The Red Sea took about 30 minutes. 2) I mixed Red Sea into the same recipe as Instant Ocean and it became apparent that it was more concentrated by volume. The amount I use to get 35 ppt from Instant Ocean was about 45 ppt from Red Sea. I'll correct my mix next time. 3) The Red Sea had an immediate and positive impact on ORP and pH. See attached apex diagram. I change about 15% of the water a week in my Biocube 29. In the attached chart I changed about 20% with Red Sea because it was more concentrated than I expected. You can immediately see positive changes in both pH and ORP. The fish and coral seem to be doing well (they have also grown well with Instant Ocean). To be honest, I didn't expect that there would be such a difference with salt. I look forward to a corresponding improvement in coral growth.
