Review on πŸ”Œ ORICO Toolfree USB 3.0 to SATA External 3.5 Hard Drive Enclosure Case: For 3.5 SATA HDD and SSD, Supports UASP and 16TB Drives by John Iverson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good product, one problem

I bought two of these, each was easy to assemble but each arrived with a weird looking cable: the computer end had a standard USB-A connector; At the end of the housing was a connector I'd never seen before: it looked like an old-style USB Type-B connector, but with an extra "lobe" at the top. I installed two SATA hard drives and connected both enclosures to my computers. USB2.0 ports. None of them were recognized by Windows. Now ORICO lists USB3.0 and doesn't mention USB2.0 compatibility so it's my fault for assuming they would work for me. As I said, the included connectors (which I've now discovered to be USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Device connectors) are upgraded versions of the original USB Type B. So I dug up some old Type B cables, they plug into the case's outlet entirely good, and both disks in two ORICO cases are working now and have been running without problems for a few days. Of course they don't give me USB3.0 speeds, but I wasn't expecting that. I am deducting one star from the rating because I contacted ORICO to get their opinion on my work and they seemed to know less about their product than I do: at first they insisted that the supplied cable would work with USB 2.0, and then suggested that I update the driver. In my experience, "update drivers" comes right after "power off and on again" in the list of unskilled technical support suggestions.
