As a child I read an abridged version of this famous story, and one cold spring evening I decided to read it again. A few pages later I was taken to the Alps with Heidi as she climbed a long mountain trail clad in too many clothes to meet her impressive grandfather. The magic of this simple story kept me reading late into the night. Sometimes it's disappointing to revisit favorite childhood movies, but not this time. Sure, there are some bitter tones, some details are extremely implausible, and at times the tone gets overly sweet or preachy, but overall it's a very entertaining story that's very well preserved. The Kindle version was well done without the horrible formatting. Mistakes that distract from the story. This version contains no illustrations, so the reader can rely on their own imagination to envision the scenes Spyry so vividly described. Maybe that's better.
