Red is about 20% brighter than green and yellow, not enough to read. I have compared six colors in military and industrial, see pictures for more information. In general, I did not notice a significant difference between the military and industrial classes. I like that industrial packaging clearly shows the color, while military packaging only says the color name. I've found them to last the advertised time, note the white and blue are rated for a shorter time than the others, 8 hours versus 12. (There are other models with different brightness/duration). The brightest by my standards were yellow and green, followed by orange. Red, blue and white are not enough to read the map; but good for marking things at the campsite or elsewhere. Other uses: give each child a different color to help you find them by marking different hiking or skiing trails, or use different colors to mark first aid/water points etc.
