Review on πŸ”¦ Enhanced Extech UV505 Portable UV AB Light by Will Ridpath

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy and quick to use, very small and portable

Let me start by saying that sometimes I can, uh, be careless. I don't usually read the instructions first. Just dive in. The battery cover is held in place by a locking mechanism that requires a push of a button to open. I didn't notice the button and couldn't move the door. Finally I opened it with a screwdriver. *Then* I noticed a button. Nothing was damaged except my pride, which testifies to the strength of the doorbolt. WHY you need a lock, no idea. I have a couple of UV-A/B meters including one where the sensor is separate and connected with a cable. Which design works best for you really depends on where you're using the counter, but it's something to consider. If the light reading is in a narrower or harder to reach area, all you can do is pull out the sensor and get easy access to the display. But you sacrifice size and durability (cables degrade over time). Devices like the Extech UV505 and one with a separate sensor. I prefer a multi-function pouch because I can put it in my pocket, a small tool pouch (I found a phone pouch worked well). The Extech UV505 includes a decent holster/bag with a top flap and belt loop. You can hang it on your tool bag's shoulder strap, belt, etc. or just throw it in your tool box/bag. The screen is easy to read and sits slightly below the front of the device so you won't scratch it if you lay it face down on a surface. There is a sensor cover that protects the sensor and blocks the light to make resetting the counter quick and easy. The general build quality is good, but it's all plastic with no bumpers - dropping a few feet onto concrete can be an issue. There is also a 1/4-20 tripod thread on the back. The kit also includes 2 AAA batteries (they are located on the bottom of the holster!). There is a loop for a lanyard, but there are no laces in the kit. I don't have a lab to test the accuracy, but the readings are the same as the other two gauges.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
