The fur is thinner than I expected but the underside is heavy canvas. It is NOT waterproof, it is waterproof. I tried a steady stream of water for a few seconds and it went right through the top. You'll need to store something waterproof if you want to keep the sheets from getting wet. If you want a truly waterproof cover, buy a waterproof children's mattress topper. It worked really well with my large round dog bed!
