Bought and used at a 400 Acre Faire. Never had a problem at low power, even from opposite angles (about 1 mile). We used a non-low power channel (8-14 at 0.5W) channels. The menus are a bit clunky, requiring repeated button presses to get to certain areas. I think most people complaining about limited range can use channels 8-14, but I haven't used them for really long distances. With my knowledge from ham radio, these things are grossly overrated from afar, but some of the complaints are definitely not what I expected. You should be able to use them for several miles. If you want more, choose GMRS or HAM. However, I think the build quality wasn't worth the NORMAL ($100/pair) price. I paid $40 for a pair and I think it's a fair price. Feels like light, cheap plastic. The menu is NOT very well thought out as it's mostly button based, the Bluetooth functionality is almost useless (although it works as intended and I got it to work without any issues) and it just seems like something that isn't there higher level. price category. However as I now have 6 of these I might buy a few more to make 10 or 12 at this price point to lend to friends and family when they need them. So they are all the same. If I had to do it again I would pay a little more attention and choose a different model, especially if it wasn't at this price point. However, if you have programmed channels and options, it's not so bad. There aren't many accessories in the kit, but I don't need them. The USB charging feature was great. AA Ni-MH 1000mAh batteries make it VERY versatile in a pinch (I can just use alkaline batteries if needed). The built in NOAA was a plus. The range was what I expected from FRS. The flashlight was ok. UPDATE: Okay, I see others (to a point). 1.38 miles and it breaks up pretty bad. Walk down the slope through or through the trees. Again, I think that's the nature of these things. 32 miles (or 28 miles) is probably a calculated range, but DEFINITELY not what it actually turns out to be. However, for what you pay for, it's not bad. Just promote it for what it really is so the average user isn't too disappointed.
