Like many people who store gas, I've used these cheap plastic containers for years and have never felt safe doing it. You may have heard stories about how they can supposedly shatter or even explode. And plastic IS porous, so it can evaporate into the atmosphere over time. I just didn't feel comfortable storing them in the attached garage knowing that once the plastic container melted they would actually start a fire. They are and difficult to use without spilling. I don't see how it's better for the environment. and certainly not safer to use. I first experienced the benefits of a metal tank when I received the news that my favorite street bike (with a full tank) was destroyed in a garage fire. When I examined the charred remains of the frame and engine, to my surprise, the steel gas tank was STILL full of gas! Some of the aluminum parts on the bike had melted and were lying in hardened puddles under the bike. But the tank remained intact. It was a hot fire. But there is NO explosion or further stoking the fire. Why? I've been told that a properly sealed gas cylinder contains very little oxygen, another ingredient needed to ignite (or explode). I did my research by looking at the products of various metal gas can manufacturers and reading user reviews. In my opinion, the Justrite safety tank has an edge over the competition thanks to its AccuFlow feature, which allows you to CONTROL the flow to any gas tank with a manual valve. It appears to have all the necessary components for a safe gas cylinder, as well as being a strong and reliable container. They are designed to seal and prevent the escape of fumes and to safely vent air in a fire without bursting under the pressure of expanded fumes and fuels. This particular model is also DOT approved to carry gasoline in your vehicle. In the event of an accident, the safety cage around the valve and filler is designed to prevent leakage when the can impacts or collides with other objects. Yes, okay, this particular model costs six times a plastic can, but what price do you charge for security? When I consider the cost of restoring a home or unfortunately a life, the decision was an easy one for me. They should last for many years. In practice, a metal can adds weight when lifted. Small people, pay attention when choosing larger glasses. But then again, it easily meters gas into my lawnmower without spilling it, and I no longer smell gas fumes around the canister. The build quality, materials and finish appear to be superb. If necessary, the company offers spare parts. Highly recommended.
