Review on πŸ“· Canon Vello Shutterboss Version II Timer Remote Switch with 3-Pin Connection by Bob Jensen

Not recommended for mission critical applications

This is a cheaper 3rd party version of the Canon TC-80N3. I've been using this with my 5D Mark IV for a few months. Although this camera has an intervalometer built in, such a device adds several features. In particular, you can set an exposure over 30 seconds and also set a delay before the first exposure. Both are very important for astrophotography, which is what I primarily use them for; This allows you to use mirror lockup with a two-second delay before exposure to allow the camera to settle. And you can do this for every exposure for critically sharp shots. I also often do 60 second exposures which is not possible with the built in interval timer. I've been using it for many months, but two shortcomings forced me to switch to the canon version. Of less importance is the time the LCD backlight stays on after a key is pressed. It's only a few seconds. If you're making adjustments in the dark, it's a little distracting when the lights go out in the middle of work. I could live with that if it weren't for the second, much more important defect, namely the connection between the camera and the connector. This connection is extremely weak, unreliable and is often dropped. If you've spent an hour in sub-zero temperatures on those rare clear, windless nights with no disturbance from the moon, and your mount is aligned squarely with the pole, the last thing to worry about is keeping your intervalometer connected to your camera. After several disappointing setbacks, I finally gave up and bought the Canon version. The time I lost and the footage I missed staying connected is worth far more than the price difference between this version and the Canon version. If you plan on using this infrequently and/or can live with a few glitches and a bit of babysitting, then this is probably something you can live with and save money on. Unfortunately, when it comes to mission-critical applications, it is let down by a few avoidable design flaws.
