No tool, yarn quality problem

Tool NOT included! This is my first latch hook project. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but the yarn breaks very easily and many pieces are either very long or very short. I'm not done yet, so I'm hoping the number of thread colors is right. It would be more useful if the template was on canvas, but the included color/character coded chart is still pretty easy to understand.
