The thing doesn't work at all. First, there's no lock on the retractable "arms", so if your mug wants to move one way or the other while you're driving, the "arms" just stretch out and drop your mug. It also rotates so your tall mug can be over the original cup holder or on the side so you can use the original cup holder. However, the same is true because the rotating part is not blocked. As soon as you turn or hit a bump, your cup will run the way it wants. This was my first time using it and on the first spin the mug fell off and spilled everything. I had to hold onto the 50oz jug for the rest of the trip, which sucked. My advice? Leave the large mug at home and buy a smaller one for the car. Those adapters suck.
