I never would have known but our vet recommended using them 3 times a week after brushing our rescue dog's teeth. His before and after surgery photos are so amazing that I want to keep his teeth and gums healthy for as long as possible before having him operate again. I had never been able to roam around in the mouths of our previous dogs so I had my doubts but wanted to try. Our hairstylist suggested holding his chin like she does when she cuts her face, uses tissues or brushes her teeth. It works! I'm pretty sure he doesn't like it, but he takes it well and that's the main thing. On days when we don't use tissues, we brush our teeth. That was 3 months ago, everything is fine and mint fresh!
