The tubes appear to be mostly for aesthetic purposes only. The amp itself is quite powerful for its size and power, and can be very loud. The only complaint I had was that all of the dials were completely black, making it difficult to read the levels on the knobs. This is easily fixed by coloring the lines and dots with a silver marker. Overall, the sound isn't bad, with decent speakers (Klipsch) and a decent subwoofer. (Klipsch again). Your neighbors will recognize your house! It has separate treble and bass controls for tone shaping, which seems to be enough for this amp. You can consider an external equalizer for additional tonal adjustments. Remember, you won't get a $3,000 stereo amp. Hard to beat in terms of price and compactness. I couldn't imagine finding anything better for this price.
