Review on 🖨️ D-Link DP-311U Wireless Print Server - Fast 11Mbps 802.11b, 1 USB Port by Kevin Graham

As others have said, the documentation is poor. It has very clear screenshots of a Windows XP install, but as other reviewers have pointed out, there's a lot missing. At first I couldn't get the computer itself to open the DP-311U's control screen via the Ethernet interface. The LAN connection indicator remained dark. Hurry I tried the *crossover cable*, the LAN LED lit up and I was able to launch the control screen in a browser window. The direct ethernet cable that Qwest provided with the DSL router could not be made to work, although it worked when configuring the router. The second problem for me was the WEP setup. The DP-311U supports all new security protocols including 256-bit encryption, but I used 128-bit WEP because I simply needed this setup to work and I will set it up later. Different devices require the key to be entered in different ways. some, like the Actiontec router supplied by Qwest, like dashes between hexadecimal digits (as far as I remember). The DP-311U will not accept a dotted key and will tell you that it rejects it; the key is not "accepted" and there is no error message. You will only find this out if you go through your settings one by one and find that WEP is not active. For the DP-311U, the encryption key must be entered without hyphens or spaces. It would be VERY NICE if the documentation or the browser interface gave an example. Aside from the crappy documentation, this appears to be a regular device. The power transformer is flimsy and probably won't prevent you from using another plug next to it on an extension cord. It is light enough to be easily installed (screws and shells provided) to drywall. And as mentioned, USB 1.1 is probably fast enough for most printing tasks.
