That's exactly why I got this "gravel cleaning siphon". It "says" it's for small betta tanks. Not correct! This is TOO POWERFUL!. We should only empty 20% of the tank at a time. But scooping water from above doesn't clean the gravel, so I have this. 1) it is too strong and drains the water too quickly. I ended up removing about a third of the tank or more while trying to get through the gravel quickly. 2) the gravel has NOT come loose. Only water came out, no debris. ie: food, feces settling on the gravel. So useless for me. That's why I only gave 2 stars. I would only put 1 but the siphon really works. It just isn't designed for the small tank as advertised and doesn't clear gravel as advertised. So if you are looking for a lightweight and powerful siphon that drains water quickly, then this is for you. But it should only be used in a large aquarium, at least 10 gallons, and not a 1.6 gallon betta tank like I have, as they say, for which it is intended.
