Replaced the doorbell with this device. I had to purchase a "doorbell wire" separately to route it to where I wanted it in my wall, but other than that all I needed was some tools I already had on hand. The reason I had to move it is because my original doorbell was pretty high on the wall and I wanted this intercom to be at shoulder height so the button would be easy to press. It works like this: If someone presses a button outside, the device inside rings like a doorbell, and the volume is adjusted. If they speak at that moment, you can't hear anything, but if you press the button inside for a second or ask "Who is it?" then you can hear them speak for a period of time, about 20 seconds, me think they only hear your point of view when you press the button. I have friends who come over but if someone shady comes on the door I can use that to talk to them instead of opening the door and it's really nice. I already had cameras on the porch but there was no sound so this was the perfect solution for me. Oh, the doorbell button on the outside is also dimly lit, which isn't very noticeable during the day, but you can see it at night, which helps people find the button and understand that it's a doorbell.
