Odor can kill nearby animals

I have a 2.5 year old who is about to be potty trained but has not potty trained him yet. The bags that came with it worked fine initially, but those bags are expensive and not available at my local Target, so I went with regular odor-control garbage bags. A few weeks after receiving this jar, her room had a persistent odor that I just couldn't get rid of. I've tried baking soda, lysol and around the jar, emptied frequently, just throwing in their small urine diapers (eg no sleepovers), nothing helped. The smell permeated the entire room to the hallway so strongly that I kept the door to her bedroom closed. As you can imagine, this increased the smell in the room so much that I actually felt guilty for forcing her to sleep there. My baby doesn't eat asparagus or anything so gross that his urine should smell like dead animals, so I'm assuming it's the accumulated smell of 500 wet diapers soaked in a plastic can. I had a baby a few weeks ago and adding another set of diapers made the smell, indeed, the power of thirty stray cats spraying their territory. That is, with a closed jar. When you press a dirty diaper, the odor attacking your nostrils is so strong that the bacteria on your skin die off. It's terrible. I wanted to like it because it worked way better than my little 'regular' wastebasket for a while (Ha, I naively thought 'why spend money on a 'special' diaper pail?', THEREFORE), but how said my baby is two and a half years old and only weighs 26 pounds so she doesn't seem unusually large or smelly for her age (I guess?) but this bucket just isn't enough to keep the smell in her room going, contrary to the litter box. I hope I have better luck with other products.
