Review on 💾 Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID: 4 Bay 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA Connectivity by Owen Phi

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The actuator temperature is high and above normal after only 90 minutes of operation.

Works great except all my drives cook at or above 120°F (49°C). My house is 75 degrees. I have an enclosure with four 2TB drives in Raid 5 that sits on my desk and is out of direct sunlight and other heat sources. The air coming out of the exhaust fan is barely warm. The case is cool to the touch, but the discs are hot, reaching that temperature in just 90 minutes. In comparison, my internal desktop drives are 98°. It's difficult to use as a media server when I can't watch a two-hour movie without worrying about the disc melting. I could add a USB powered fan on the front but I don't feel like I need it considering it's brand new. Update June 17th: I removed the two front covers and noticed a slight drop of 1-2 degrees per disc. Turned the fan on at a higher speed, now louder, but keeping the hard drives at the desired temperature.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
