Very strong chemical odor

I was very pleased with this item. My 22 month old son is now very interested in letters and numbers. Items are bright and colorful. When I opened the packaging while swimming, I immediately threw it in the water. My little one let out an excited "Wow" and started playing with them. That's when I noticed the strong chemical smell. It reminded me of mothballs. Unfortunately I will throw these away. I am concerned that any chemical used in it will leach into the bath water with prolonged use. I don't want to risk anything.
