For plantar fasciitis, my physical therapist recommended freezing a bike/running water bottle with tap water and my podiatrist suggested a soft drink water bottle. Being an idiot I compared all three - here are my observations: * The small protrusions provide a massaging effect and create a small contact gap between the plastic and your skin. A regular water bottle filled with frozen water feels "colder" because it has a larger contact surface area for heat transfer. * The refrigerant in this video has a higher freezing point of around 45 degrees (measured with an industrial thermocouple). An ice-filled soda bottle (100% water) definitely has the coldest surface β fairly close to 32 degrees in a typical home freezer β and may be too cold for some, especially those with bare feet. The water bottle was somewhere in between. * The refrigerant in this video also "melts" faster than pure ice. While it doesn't stay cold that long, my sessions weren't long enough to make a noticeable difference. *Soft drink bottles are made of thin-walled PET and can only be used 2-4 times. Typical water bottles are made from HDPE or LDPE. This roller is most likely HDPE. If you fill one of them with frozen liquid and drop them on a hard surface, they will most likely break - they are not designed to be hit. This freeze roller worked exactly as expected for plantar fasciitis treatment. Frozen water bottles definitely "feel" a bit colder, but they must be frozen upright with the lid open (to expand) and may leak as the ice melts. You buy this scooter mainly for convenience - throw it in the freezer and you're good to go. I've started using a frozen water bottle more often, but that's just my experience.
