For most high volume cable ties or outdoor cable tie holders, the wider and longer the better. So that's a good length and width. There's nothing worse than a zip tie that snaps when you're standing on stairs or in an awkward position, or a zip tie that snaps when you tighten it. These ties are available in both width and length to solve these problems. Just trim off the excess even if you are making a 6 inch tie around the perimeter. You want to be strong and you want to put it on well when needed and then be able to withstand the heat/cold. All is well.
