I started this when my kids were very young and we used cloth diapers. It was a non-toxic way to eliminate odors in the fabric. Since then I always have a bottle at home for accidental stains on the carpet. We recently adopted 3(!) pets and suddenly we are an animal family. My trusty back-out does a great job with laundry that someone has peed on. I wring out the fabric well and start the soak mode on the machine. Then I do a full wash and that pretty much solves all the problems. I also use it for carpet accidents. This doesn't prevent pets from revisiting the neighborhood, but it does remove the existing odor that people would notice. And since it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, I'm very happy with it.
